Weekend Math Challenge

Crystal emptied her piggy bank. She separated the loonies, quarters, and dimes into piles. One pile had 5 coins, one had 4 coins, and one had 3 coins. Altogether Crystal had $5.25. Which coins did she have?

Craft Fair Sales - Math Challenge



The students at the Maitland River School Craft Fair are selling necklaces, bracelets, and rings. Maddy counted the necklaces and found that there were 6 short of 5 dozen. The students had 30 more rings than necklaces and a dozen fewer bracelets than rings.

When packed in boxes holding 6 items per box, how many boxes of each item did they have?

5 backpacks weighing 19.5 lb, 18.05 lb, 19.8 lb, 19.35 lb, and 18.9 lb.
Will, Kierra, Emma, Savannah, and Connor have weighed their backpacks.
  • Will's backpack weighs the most.
  • Emma's backpack weighs 0.45 lb less than Kierra's backpack.
  • Savannah's lunch weighs 1.5 lb. With that lunch out of the backpack, the backpack weighs 16.55 lb.
  • Connor's backpack weighs more than Emma's.

Farewell Genevieve!

Today we said goodbye to Genevieve. She is leaving for the rest of the school year and travelling to New Zealand. What an adventure! We are sad to see her go, but excited for her to experience a new country and culture. We celebrated her last day with a yummy potluck.

Agricultural and Water Festival

On April 8th, we travelled to Seaforth for the Agricultural and Water Festival. It was a full day of activities and learning about our local watershed and agricultural industries. There was lots to see and do!

Alzheimer's Presentation

The Huron County Alzheimer's Society visited us today for a presentation about Alzheimer's Disease. We learned how the brain sends messages to different parts of our body and how those messages can get mixed up by someone with Alzheimer's. We also talked about short and long term memories and how Alzheimer's affects memory.

Valentine's Math Challenge


Roman has asked his mother to give him some money to buy 
Valentine's Day cards for his class party.  His mother gives him 
$6.00 to buy the cards.  When Roman visits the store he finds that
there are 5 cards in each box.  One box costs $1.40.  Roman has 26
children in his class, but he doesn't need a card for himself. He does want to give Ms. Earl a valentine. (Don't worry about the tax) 

a. How many boxes does Roman need to buy to have 26 cards in all?

b. How much money will Roman spend if he gets enough cards 
     for the class?
     
c. Will Roman have enough money?  How much money does Roman have left over, or how much more money does he need?
